Fiction & Documentary 4Game Over

, Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus 82 min

The world as a playground, where events have long since left the playing level. Four experimental documentary studies sharpen our perception of life’s hidden realities: memories of riots in a Romani village reconstructed as a Machinima are addressed, as well as the education of future escorts for deported refugees. This is definitely a political film programme, as is the secretly filmed police interrogation of a Chinese director. The camera takes up an unvariable position, while a city’s memory is finally awakened. Images of war blend into a child’s play with frightening ease. In the end one asks oneself, how much all these facets really have to do with reality. A gripping programme.

The immaculates

France2013 13 min 27 sec Italian

Reality as a gloomy fairytale: one day in 2011 there was a tragic incident in a Romani settlement in Turin. The camera slowly passes through a desert of real footage and 3D animated Machinima fantasy images on the reconstructed original location, passing forlorn landscapes and ruins. Traces of memory, as well as its breaks, become visible. There is no single truth and yet it spreads like wildfire, escalating in collective violence – until a real fire is ignited. A carefully reconstructed escalation.

The Questioning

China2013 20 min 30 sec Chinese (Traditional)

24 July 2012: Chinese film maker Rikun Zhu is out and about in the Jiangxi province to support human rights activists during election campaigns. Knowing that the government had already taken action previously and the police had beaten up other supporters, he positions a camera in a hotel room with full view of any potential incidents. When policemen want to search the hotel room at midnight, the camera becomes a secret witness of an “everyday” interrogation. A lesson in exercising power and victimisation.

Escort

Netherlands2013 18 min 55 sec Dutch

How are young border policemen and women prepared for their future task of escorting deported refugees? Is a human deportation at all possible? Can a state’s arbitrary measures be carried out in accordance with human rights? Guido Hendrikx’s accurate observations at a training centre of the Dutch border police might not deliver any direct answers, but carefully examines the training of the executive forces. The escorts and their methods of accompanying refugees back to their country of origin is this documentary’s focus.

COME AND PLAY

Germany2013 30 min Russian

Grisha, a Russian boy in Berlin, likes playing at war best. He runs through the streets, aiming invisible weapons, throwing imaginary grenades and fighting unreal enemies. Slowly the game becomes nightmarish reality, bringing ghosts of the past to life. Images of horror catch up with reality, archive footage alternates with fictional black and white images with stylistic confidence, blurring the bounds between the past and the present. A poetic, surreal war film, which allows the audience to experience the history that is embedded in the city.
