Fiction & Documentary 1The Song of the Misfit

, Stadtkino im Künstlerhaus 72 min

Independent and idiosyncratic nonconformists are the focus of the first programme in the Fiction & Documentary competition. This Song of the Misfit is dedicated to all who like to perceive the world as a strange place or are themselves considered alien by the rest of the world. It is full of songs that accompany us and often don’t let us go, songs from the past, hymns and rhythms, catchy tunes and classics. We watch Jessy getting ready for her drag queen act at a bar, and Matha, who was predestined to be an astronaut, and we’re right there when a 10-year-old boy wanders the corridors of a self-storage and a teacher has a nervous breakdown in front of her girls’ choir. Life is a mystery, everyone must stand alone …

JESSY

Brazil2013 15 min Portuguese

Jessy, short for Jessica Cristopherry, is the stage name that actor and author Paula Lice gave himself on his path to becoming a drag queen. The path to being a travesty-pro, however, is a long one, a part of which has been captured by this energetic and tender portrait. The training and hyperactive preparations for the first big performance in a bar in Brasilian Salvador seem like a cross between a casting show and La cage aux folles – a charming film with all the hymnal splendour of non-conformism.

AFRONAUTS

United States2014 14 min 05 sec English

An alternative space race story based on real events: in the late 1960’s a teacher in Zambia founds the National Academy of Space Research and lets ten expatriates prepare a rocket launch. 17-year-old Matha is selected as an astronaut. Her training includes simulating zero gravity by rolling down a hill in a barrel. Ghanaian film maker Frances Bodomo translates the mix of regional myths and the fascination of science into a dreamy black-and-white film.

SANS DEHORS NI DEDANS

WITHIN AND WITHOUT

Canada2013 15 min 51 sec Canadian French

Under the stoic eye of an iguana a 10-year-old boy looks after his mother, an unemployed opera singer, who has lost her grip on life. They live together in a self storage unit under a train tunnel, the Christmas tree feels as misplaced between the austere metal walls as does the magnificent dressing table in the middle. Joelle Desjardins Paquette gives the calm, black humorous film a morbid ambience, making the most of it in beautifully framed shots – right up to the haunting Song of the Misfit.

A MILLION MILES AWAY

United States2014 27 min 53 sec English

Life is a mystery, everyone must stand alone … this is the first line of a famous song from the 80ies, which sketches the situation of young protagonists of A Million Miles Away in its stead. The teacher too, who comes face-to-face with the girls’ choir in the classroom in the end, yearns for belonging. Together they experience a kind of supernatural transformation, accompanied by the haunting choir-version of an 80’s Metal anthem. Melancholia becomes a survival strategy in the Midwest in Jennifer Reeder’s great coming-of-age variation.
